One to go

From blue sky morning into darkness.
This dust will never settle.
It chokes the souls of those of us
Who watch in disbelief, and hope -
One still stands.

Cracked and broken against
A blue sky mixing with smoke.
Maybe it's not as bad as it looks.
One is down with dust all around -
One to go.

Jerry Grinstead

What I saw in this painting when I turned it this way was one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center cracked, but still standing, dust where the other one had been, and blue sky (remember the beautiful blue sky that morning?). This was sometime between 9:59 am and 10:28 am on September 11, 2001. Twentynine minutes when the world changed.
